Lesson 7: Parental Responsibilities- Jochebed (Moses' Mother)

Lesson 7: Parental Responsibility- Jochebed
Moses’ Mother

(The lesson is based on Exodus chapter 2:1-11)

Jochebed is referred to as a daughter of Levi, who married a man of the house of Levi. Wed to her nephew Amram, she was both his wife and aunt; a situation not uncommon in those days.

Three children were born to Amram and Jochebed. All of them were chosen by the Lord for the task of leading His people out of Egypt, and into the Promise Land.
The oldest child was Miriam, a gifted musician and poetess who led the women in praise. The eldest son was Aaron, Israel’s first high priest and spokesman for Moses. The youngest of the three was Moses, one of the greatest leaders the world has ever known.

Though Jochebed had some influence upon her son while he was small, she had to give him over to be raised in a pagan environment. She trusted God to teach him the way.
We as parents, often wonder what influence we have in a society that has much influence over our children. Our responsibility is to teach them as well as we can while we have them, then commit them to the Lord for His training.

Just a good verse: “And all thy children shall be taught of the Lord; and great shall be the Peace of thy children.” (Isaiah 54:13)

The most important thing is not so much who you are but what you do to meet the challenges and responsibilities that come. Jochebed took her motherhood very seriously, nurturing her children in the Lord with conscientious devotion. Surely she must have been the chief influence unto God in the preparation of these children for the great tasks God gave to each in leading His people out of bondage.
