Lesson 8: Deborah- The Holy Spirit

Lesson 8: Deborah- The Holy Spirit
Based on Judges 4 and 5

Deborah:
At the time she was the only woman judge of Israel. She has been described as, “a bee in peace” and “a wasp in war.” She was also a prophetess and military leader.
God had spoken in the past through His leaders Moses and Joshua, and now He was speaking through Deborah.
Long before Deborah exercised her uncommon leadership and decision-making skills to save her nation in a time of trouble, she was a homemaker, a wife and mother in Israel.
Her compassion had been awakened by the atrocities suffered by her people. She arose to make herself available, and she was victorious as she herself trusted God, then inspired others within her sphere of influence with that same trust.
Highlights on Deborah:
  • Leadership Train-

She judged Israel during the oppression by Jabin (Judges 4:3-4)
  • God Promises-

God promised to deliver Israel from Sisera. (Judges 4:7)
  • God’s Instructions-

The Lord commanded her to send the troops out to destroy Sisera. (Judges 4:6-7)
  • The People’s Affirmation:

Barak and the people followed the leadership of Deborah. (Judges 4:8)
  • Deborah’s Leadership-

She inspired Barak to pursue God’s plan, leading him into battle. (Judges 4:9)
Observations:
  • She listened to God (Judges 4:5)
  • She had a servant’s heart (Judges 4:9)
  • She delegated tasks (Judges 4:6-7)
  • She led with authority from God (Judges 4:4)
  • She motivated the people (Judges 4:9-14)
  • She was a respected leader (Judges 4:8)

Reflection Questions:
1. As we look at Deborah’s life and how God used her, in what ways are you allowing God to use you?

2. Have you received any gifts of the Holy Spirit? If yes, what are they?

3. If you have not received any gifts of the Holy Spirit, are you praying about it? Which one will you like to have?

Conclusion:

“God is the same yesterday, today, and for eternity! What He did through Deborah, He can do through us. We just have to be willing and available to the Holy Spirit at all times, in order to know when God is speaking to us, and to understand exactly what He wants for us to do. The only question is are you willing to be available for the Holy Spirit to guide your life?

Lesson 7: Parental Responsibilities- Jochebed (Moses' Mother)

Lesson 7: Parental Responsibility- Jochebed
Moses’ Mother

(The lesson is based on Exodus chapter 2:1-11)

Jochebed is referred to as a daughter of Levi, who married a man of the house of Levi. Wed to her nephew Amram, she was both his wife and aunt; a situation not uncommon in those days.

Three children were born to Amram and Jochebed. All of them were chosen by the Lord for the task of leading His people out of Egypt, and into the Promise Land.
The oldest child was Miriam, a gifted musician and poetess who led the women in praise. The eldest son was Aaron, Israel’s first high priest and spokesman for Moses. The youngest of the three was Moses, one of the greatest leaders the world has ever known.

Though Jochebed had some influence upon her son while he was small, she had to give him over to be raised in a pagan environment. She trusted God to teach him the way.
We as parents, often wonder what influence we have in a society that has much influence over our children. Our responsibility is to teach them as well as we can while we have them, then commit them to the Lord for His training.

Just a good verse: “And all thy children shall be taught of the Lord; and great shall be the Peace of thy children.” (Isaiah 54:13)

The most important thing is not so much who you are but what you do to meet the challenges and responsibilities that come. Jochebed took her motherhood very seriously, nurturing her children in the Lord with conscientious devotion. Surely she must have been the chief influence unto God in the preparation of these children for the great tasks God gave to each in leading His people out of bondage.

Lesson 7: Review Questions

Lesson 7: Review Questions

1. Are you raising your children in the fear of the Lord and according to His Word? If so, how do you do this? If not, where can you begin?

2. What do you do about the influences over your children that you know are against the principles of God and His Word?

Lesson 6: Sisters Leah and Rachel (Genesis 29-35)

Rachel :(The Beloved Wife)

Rachel, whose name means "ewe," was caring for her father's sheep in Haran when she met an unexpected visitor her cousin Jacob, who was looking for his family. After what seems to have been love at first sight (Gen. 29:11-12), Jacob promised Rachel's father Laban that he would work seven years to earn the right to marry the beautiful shepherdess (Gen.29:20). The wedding ceremony proceeded according to local tradition, allowing the men to celebrate, while keeping the bride out of sight until the groom entered her darkened tent.

Only after it was too late did Jacob realize that Laban had deceived him. He had actually married Laban's older daughter, Leah, whom he did not love. A week after his marriage to Leah, Jacob received Rachel as his wife. Rachel must have suffered agony. Seven years of anticipation were dashed by her father's trickery. The rivalry and jealousy between Rachel and Leah and perhaps a desire on Rachel's part for retaliation against her father for his deception must have greatly strained the family.

Furthermore, Rachel was unable to bear children (Gen.29:31), increasing her jealousy of Leah. She blamed her husband, then allowed her maid to bear children for her. Finally, Rachel became pregnant and gave birth to Joseph, who became Jacob's favorite (Gen. 30:22-24).

Rachel, a woman greatly loved by her husband, gave the world outstanding son; and despite her flaws, she stands as an honored daughter of Yahweh.

 Leah: (The Unwanted Wife)

Leah is described as having "delicate" or "weak" eyes (Gen. 29:17), which could allude to poor eyesight or merely to a lack of sparkle. Through subterfuge, Leah, instead of the promised Rachel, became the wife of Jacob. Although Leah may have been at least a willing participant in this deception, she could have been merely an obedient daughter. Nevertheless, she obviously loved Jacob and was devoted to him throughout their marriage, though surely Leah's soul must have shriveled to be the object of Jacob's disappointment and scorn as well as the tool of her conniving father.

Living with the constant comparison to her unusually beautiful sister, Leah was, nevertheless not hidden from God's caring eyes. In His omniscience, God allowed her to conceive even though her sister's fertility was delayed. She had honor of mothering Jacob's oldest son, but she wrongly assumed that it would earn love from her husband (Gen.29:32). Leah faced her second childbirth realistically, but apparently deep desire gnawed at her (v.33) . When a third pregnancy came, she exclaimed, "Now this time my husband will become attached to me," revealing an intense longing for love (v.34).

Leah began her marriage by focusing on what she lacked and being miserable, but she changed her heart and focus to what she had and determined to praise the Lord. Not until the birth of her fourth son, Judah, did this unwanted wife learn to trust Yahweh ("Now I will praise the Lord," Gen. 29:35). Tracing the messianic lineage, the world rejoices with Leah as her faithfulness was rewarded. "The Loin of the tribe of Judah," Jesus the Messiah, came through her offspring Judah and the priesthood through her son Levi (Rev. 5:5).

Leah personified for every woman the crucial need to live primarily for God and His glory. Though she may have been unattractive in appearance, unloved, unwanted, and even despised, God saw in her an inner beauty that equipped her to carry out His plan
(Gen. 29:31). She could not change Jacob, but she could change herself and recognize God's hand in her life (Gen. 30:13). Leah, for her part, did not let the attitudes of others distract her from the task God had given to her.

Thoughts from Lesson 4- (Genesis 19:15-26)

This week we learned about Lot's wife and how she became a pillar of salt for looking back.

In our present lives being saved Christians, we too can sometimes take a glimpse at our "worldly life" and maybe feel tempted to do or act like we use to. Thank God, for mercy and grace because I believe we would've become just like Lot's wife a pillar of salt, for many times that we do let our old selves pop up again.
We have to understand that we sleep with the enemy every night, and our enemy is our own flesh!
If we don't commit ourselves 100 percent to God and to His statues, we can easily fall into our old ways without even realizing it. The flesh doesn't want what the Holy Spirit wants; the flesh wants to always do the opposite of the Holy Spirit! However, when we pray and follow God wholeheartedly, He will give us Strength to overcome any desires of the flesh. We should never look back, but instead look forward to the many ways that God can use our testimony to impact other people's lives.

Lesson 4: Lot's Wife

Lesson 4: Lot's Wife Genesis 19:15-26

Lot was living in Sodom where the inhabitants were wicked and sinners before the Lord exceedingly(Genesis 13:14) Lot became a citizen of Sodom, sat at the city's gate in a position of authority, and was treated with honor as a relative of mighty Abraham, who had delivered the city from an invasion.

Though Lot was regarded as a righteous soul,he evidently closed his eyes to the wickedness of the people and married a woman of Sodom. They had two daughters. Sodom was such a cesspool of sin that God declared He would destroy it. But because of Abraham's intercession,God agreed to save Lot and His family. So two angels went to take Lot and his family out of the city before God's judgment fell. Though Lot,his wife and daughters seemed reluctant to leave, the angels admonished them to escape to the mountain without looking back. Again, Lot hesitated. He wanted to go to the little city of Zoar. As they fled, fire and brimstone fell from heaven and completely destroyed Sodom. Walking behind her husband, Lot's wife turned to look back. She was overtaken with sulfurous vapors and became solidified with salt. She perished as she stood, entombed as a pillar.

Why did she look back? Perhaps she remembered the life of pleasure she was leaving behind and wanted one more glimpse of what she was giving up. Maybe she had so much unresolved guilt and hurt that she was unable to face a new life. Maybe she was angry at God for what was happening.

 Why Remember Lot's Wife?

We too live in a society today that is becoming more and more like that of Sodom. We live in a world that could be viewed as also being a cesspool of sin and sinners living within it. We are surrounded by pornography, violence, drugs, crime, divorce, and infidelity. God's wrath is also due upon us, yet it is through His mercy that we are spared each and every day. Jesus wants us to learn from Lot's wife. Instead of looking back or wanting the things of this world that He calls us to leave behind, we are called to fix our eyes solely upon Him and listen to His voice. It is the only way we are to survive in the days ahead. We are called to be His bride. We are not to look back at the old ways of the world and what sin has to offer, but to look ahead to what His kingdom has to offer.

Reflection Questions

1. Are there things of this world that you look back on when God is calling You?

2. Are there obstacles that you need to overcome to leave the world behind and just walk towards Christ?

3. Are there things in your life or from your past that you still look back and harp on that are preventing you from walking on the path that Christ is trying to lead you on?

Challenge

This week put aside all the cares of the world and all the tempting distractions, just simply leave them all behind, learn from Lot's wife...... follow God's wishes and don't look back!

Lesson 3: Sarah and Hagar

Lesson 3: Sarah and Hagar-
Conflict between the Flesh and the Holy Spirit

Based on Genesis 15, 16,17 and 21:9-21

Sarah was Abraham’s wife, which God had made a covenant with Abraham, declaring that Abraham’s seed would inherit all of the promised land.  In Genesis chapter 17:1-3 we see where God confirmed to Abraham at age ninety-nine that he will be the father of many nations.
Now Abraham’s wife Sarah, was past the age of childbearing, she couldn’t understand how she could bear an heir. Instead of allowing God to bring about His will in His way, she chose the way of self will, the flesh and gave her Egyptian handmaid to Abraham so that she might bear him a child. This resulted in the birth of Ishmael a descendant in continuing conflict with Issac, the promised child later born to Abraham at age one-hundred and Sarah age ninety. ( Genesis 21:5)

* Instead of Sarah acting under the will of God, and waiting on what He had promised her; she allowed her flesh to take over and gave her maid to her husband. Due to her disobedience, the child the Hagar gave birth to named Ishmael, became a father of a great nation also, but his descendants were against Issac’s descendants.

*Sometimes we can be like Sarah, and try to “help” God by doing things with our own strength and our own judgement. Many times in result of doing that, things end up worst than what they were. We as Christian women need to learn, how to live in the Spirit and not in the flesh. In Philippians 3:3, it says, “We are to have no confidence in the flesh.” Because the flesh is our enemy!!

I really like this quote, “As long as Self is on the throne, God’s Spirit can’t rule!”

Which is so true, as long as we are putting our confidence in ourselves, we won’t allow for God to guide us. We have to in all situations no matter how big or how small it may be, we must let the Holy Spirit guide us. If  we do like Sarah, and let the flesh rule over God’s Spirit, we are number 1 being disobedient to God’s word and 2 we are letting satan make our decisions instead of letting the One who knows all truth guide us, which is the Holy Spirit.

Lesson 2: Martha & Mary (The Bethany Sisters)

Lesson 2: Martha and Mary
The Bethany Sisters
Luke 10:38-42

Martha means: Lady of the house
 Mary means: Wise woman

Who were these two women:

Mary and Martha are the most familiar set of sisters in the Bible. Both Luke and John describe them as friends of Jesus. Luke's story, though only four verses long, has been a complex source of inspiration, interpretation, and debate for centuries. John's story, which says the sisters had a brother named Lazarus, spans seventy verses. Though some earlier interpreters blended the person of Mary of Bethany with Mary Magdalene and the sinful woman of Luke 7:36-50, current scholars believe she was a different person.

Luke's Story

According to Luke, Martha was head of the household; she welcomed Jesus into her home. Mary was probably younger. Like most sisters, these two women had conflicts which emerged because of their different personalities, roles, and simply the fact that they were siblings
.
“Now as they went on their way, he entered a certain village, where a woman named Martha welcomed him into her home. She had a sister named Mary, who sat at the Lord's feet and listened to what he was saying. But Martha was distracted by her many tasks; so she came to him and asked, "Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me to do all the work by myself? Tell her then to help me." But the Lord answered her, "Martha, Martha, you are worried and distracted by many things; there is need of only one thing. Mary has chosen the better part, which will not be taken away from her" (Luke 10:38-42).

Lesson 2: Martha and Mary
Thinking Questions:

1. In your busy life how can you eliminate things that are less important, and make time to what is important?

2. Are you a Martha or a Mary? Why?

3. What inspired you most about these two sisters?

Reflection Verse: “ Martha, Martha, you are worried and upset about many things, but only one thing is needed. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.”  (Luke 10:41-42)

Verse of the Day 1.18.11

"No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it."
(Corinthians 10:13)
